  1. I called and called early this morning to register for an appt for energy assistance. I did get through, but now I am dismayed to learn this funding may be cut. Oh, how I need that assistance! Last year I qualified for $250 for the season. Since that time my expenses all have increased–food, rent, utilities, gas and all the other ‘essentials.’ Please support this bill to block the decrease of these funds.

  2. I was wondering if you could let me know when you will be going before congress on the LIHEAP Protection Act and if this will be broadcast on c-span so we could watch.

As a recipient of Liheap, many, many of your constituents are in dire need of this assistance. Many of the Mainers are only getting SS benefits of $400 – $800 a month and LiHeap has helped them get through the colder months for heating their homes. When Pres. Obama cut the program he also said that the cost of fuel would be cut in 1/2. Neither has occurred, in fact, the cost is more than it was when he cut it.

Our allotment for the year was $648.00. That only gave us 179.6 gals of fuel. My husband and I only make $8,000 per year and it is that because we are only doing what we can to make ends meet, because all the jobs that use to be in this county are now gone. That is not even one tank of fuel, when we usually need 3 tanks of fuel for the months. Last year we received $1800.00 for the year, and even at that, with the fuel prices, we still had to get extra from other organizations.

I realize that other people in other states might not understand, however, here in Maine when temperatures are well below freezing for up to three months, I fear the worst for my neighbors.

If you cannot get more fuel assistance for the constituents in Maine, you will have many, many senior citizens and families that will freeze to death this winter. I fear this will happen.

Please let us know when you will be going before the Senate on this most important legislation and if this will be broadcast on c-span so we can watch!

    Thank you,
Diane Bender in Aroostook County, Maine.

  3. Why should everyone in the country be forced to subsidize your heating bills because you choose to live where it is cold in the winter? Shack up with someone and share some of the costs. Or put on a darn sweater.
